A dance-theater adaptation of Shel Silverstein's "The Giving Tree," DMDC embarks on a creative journey told through the mediums of dance and American Sign Language (ASL). The beloved children’s story follows the nuanced relationship between a growing boy and a tree, and resonated deeply with the experiences of Co-Artistic Director, Francesca Marinaro’s deaf and hard-of-hearing family members. The work provided an opportunity to investigate expressive movement and visual storytelling. Our creative process and future productions centers deaf and hard-of-hearing community members - interpreters, performers, and advisors - and celebrates diverse forms of expression.
